Switch in the right order
Publish first, move the address second, cancel last. Do it the other way round and your email stops working.
This is the one page in the help centre about order. Everything else can be undone. This cannot always be, and the usual damage is email that stops working in the middle of a working week.
The order
- Publish your new website here. It sits on a temporary address and nobody can find it yet. Look it over in your own time.
- Move your web address here. Your old website stays up while you do, so there is always something to go back to.
- Cancel your old provider. Last.
Do 3 before 2 and your address has no website. Do 3 before you have sorted out email and you have no email.
Why email breaks
Many Swedish hosts sell website, web address and email as one package:
one.com, Loopia and Hemsida24 all do. Cancel the package and it is not only the
website that goes. Addresses like info@yourbusiness.se stop receiving, and the
mail already sitting there may go with them.
We never touch your email settings. Connecting your address here changes only what points at the website, never what points at the mail. As long as your old subscription is alive, email carries on exactly as before.
Before you cancel anything, answer this: where does my email live, and am I paying for it in the same subscription as the website? If you do not know, ring your old provider's support and ask. It takes five minutes and it is the cheapest question in the whole move.
If you want to bring the email
Two routes, both of which work:
- Leave the email where it is. Cancel only the website part, if your provider sells it separately. Simplest, and nothing stops working.
- Move the email to a new provider (Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, for example). Do it before you cancel the old one, read a test message at the new address, and cancel only once that works.
Your old addresses
When we fetch your website we add redirects for the pages that changed address, so your place in Google follows. We also say plainly which addresses have no home with us, while your old site is still up and you can still open them.
That is why the list appears before you save anything: after the move, the old site cannot be opened any more.
If something goes wrong
Your old website stays up until you cancel it yourself. Until then every step is reversible: you can point the address back, and you can simply not publish.
